Etymology of the name Budapest
Since the names convey most of the characteristics of the old cities, the combination of Voda (Buda, water) and Pest (warm cave, bath) is suitable for the name of Budapest:
The first and second parts are combined. Immigrant Magyars did not correctly understand the meaning of the Slavic name of the city of Buda Pest or Pest Buda and thought that their parts were separate names of its two parts.
води: water
пещ, or pešt, referencing a cave where fires burned or a limekiln.
Known as the "City of Baths," Budapest sits on a fault line, and its thermal baths are naturally fed by 120 hot springs. The city is home to an impressive selection of thermal baths, many of which date to the 16th century.
